HISTORY OF THE BUILDING

This 19th Century grade II listed building is a rare example of a thatched schoolhouse. It has been the heart of village life for over 200 years, and has now been lovingly restored so it may continue to be so.

ABOUT WEETING 21

Weeting 21 is a community organisation which grew from an informal group of people who initiated a village appraisal scheme.

It is a company limited by guarantee, which means it has no shareholders; all profits are ploughed back into the company for the benefit of the village.

It is also a registered charity, which means that its activities have to be of a charitable nature, for the benefit of others.

The constitution of Weeting 21 requires new members of the charity to live locally, so it really is a local organisation.

The board of directors of Weeting 21 represent a broad cross section of Weeting's community. They are local people with complimentary interests and skills. Between them, they represent many of the organisations active in the village. The boards' priorities are based on the priorities drawn up from a village appraisal.

Funding has come from a variety of sources, including Breckland Council, English Partnerships, New Opportunities Fund, Norfolk County Council, Rural Development Commission, and EEDA.

Income has been generated from renting out rooms to health professionals, community groups, youth organisations, computer time, etc. Computing courses have been run with plans for many more.

We will also be asking local people to continue to support the project by joining the low cost membership scheme for full use of the centre's facilities.

You can help too. Become a member of the centre; use the facilities for parties, meetings, etc; book yourself a place on a course; volunteer to help others use the centre, by giving them a lift; help us create publicity materials and course brochures/posters; volunteer to help out at the Luncheon Club, Cyber Café and After School Club; help plan, organise and run fundraising activities; organise a new club or group to meet a local need; tell us what you think about the centre and how it is run; join committees looking at future development for the centre and the wider regeneration project; and much, much more. Come in to the centre to find out more.
